Uber seems to be operating as a cab company, but it is subsequently trying to be seen as just a platform. This discrepancy explains the many lawsuits in various countries that Uber is involved in. By acting like a standard cab provider and yet not abiding by the associated laws under the guise of being a platform, they anger not only the traditional cab industry but also many local governments. Uber is also investing a lot of time and money into selfdriving cars, demonstrating that while it currently needs its “partners”, it is ultimately trying to replace them. While it is true that self-driving technology has the potential to make millions of people worldwide unemployed, this does not have much to do with Uber, as this would happen with or without Uber. It does, however, explain Uber’s seeming indifference towards its high turnover rate. The company does not need a sustainable and durable relationship with its drivers as long as there is a big enough supply to fill the gap until self-driving cars are a viable option. Therefore, it does not hurt Uber to work its way through its drivers at such an alarming rate. (Business Disruptors, 2017) 41
