Discussion Ultimately, as long as Uber can legally get away with what it is doing, it will probably keep going until it has achieved its ultimate goal of replacing its drivers. Innovation is advantageous, and a future with selfdriving taxis would be great. However, we are not there yet, and, at present, we need to take an in-depth at companies such as Uber and Airbnb and ask ourselves if this is really what we want. Just as we banned child labor even though it made products cheaper, we should also ask ourselves if we want companies operating in a capitalist society without being bound by the fundamental principles of that same capitalistic system. Stakeholder capitalism can only work when governments set a level playing field. Where the lines need to be drawn is up to society. What is clear, however, is that things like maximizing shareholder value need to be capped, and taking care of communities should be encouraged and possibly enforced with a required minimum effort from large organizations.
