Management Summary The Museon is a unique institution located in the heart of the International Zone in The Hague. A museum for science and culture, it offers highly topical interactive displays and an outstanding educational collection. For the next few years the aim will be to increase visitor numbers and achieve greater impact by programming activities that are relevant, exciting and inclusive, appeal to many different sections of society, and routinely feature a wide variety of voices. CLEAR PROFILE The Museon aims to inspire new generations to work to make the planet a good home for everybody. We showcase global issues and explain why sustainable solutions are important. This is done primarily via our permanent exhibition, One Planet, which presents the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an accessible, interactive way. One Planet will be constantly updated and made more accessible by adding explainers and ‘expeditions’. Ongoing relevant collecting will enable us to enhance One Planet by adding iconic objects illustrating global issues. RELEVANT AND EXCITING PROGRAMMING There will be a constantly changing programme of public activities. At any one time, this will be organized around a chosen theme from One Planet and will usually consist of a small display, talks, demonstrations, debates, meetups and outreach activities. National Geographic’s temporary exhibitions of work by top photographers will also be relevant to the themes of One Planet. DISTINCTIVE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Our services for schools will focus both on world studies & geography and on science & technology. They will also respond to the forthcoming changes in the Dutch primary school curriculum, in which global issues will occupy a major place. The permission we have been given to use part of our collection for teaching purposes will enable us to make wider use of it in our services to schools. Together with other parties in The Hague, we will initiate a city-wide education programme in the science & technology field. DIVERSE AUDIENCE Through our services to schools, we serve every postcode area in The Hague. Diversity will be a major theme in our exhibitions and the inclusion of a variety of voices an important principle in our programming. The outside world will be given a greater say in programming and we will regularly organize activities designed to attract specific groups to the museum. In order to attract a varied audience, we will each year programme a large, highly accessible exhibition on a subject at the interface of culture and science and linked to our global issues. We will also take part of our programming out into the city in an effort to get closer to our target audiences. ROBUST NETWORK Over the coming years, the Museon will invest heavily in its relationships with stakeholders, companies, community organizations and NGOs. We will present ourselves as an ‘SDG House’, work hand in hand with other local parties concerned with culture, education and sustainability, and participate in exchanges of knowledge at national and international level. MODIFIED ORGANISATION Our internal organization will change. It will be tailored far more closely to programming and will be focused to a greater degree on co-working with external parties. As vacancies occur, they will be filled with an eye to achieving greater diversity within the organization. We will strengthen our financial basis by boosting revenue from admissions and activities. In recent years we have been successful in fund-raising and attracting sponsorship and we will continue our efforts in this direction. We will also work to increase revenue from, for example, exhibition hires, venue hire and crowdfunding. The result will be more visitors, a more diverse audience and a sound financial basis.
