Empowering a healthy future together

Empowering a healthy future together

Welcome to our Seminis® Experience iX event 2020 in Enkhuizen & Wageningen While Seminis is always committed to bringing our customers the latest innovations in seed technology, we also understand success for our growers’ operations relies on more than just the seed itself. That is why we created iX. The Seminis iX event brings growers and industry experts together to encourage collaboration, identify new opportunities, and address challenges growers face on any given day in any given season. In turn, this interaction fuels the future of the vegetable industry. Covid-19 has turned our world upside down, both in business and in our private lives. At Seminis, we know how deeply you value an annual visit to our demo fields in Enkhuizen and Wageningen (The Netherlands) to see what the future will bring with Seminis’ open field and processing varieties; cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, bean, sweetcorn, carrot and onion. It has become clear that it will be impossible for us to welcome you there in person during these Corona times. But we remain determined to empower a healthy future together by taking you on a digital journey through our demo fields. This year we will come to you ! Follow the Seminis teams and our iX partners via live stream sessions. Scan the QR code or look at our website for the latest news and the live stream agenda. We would like to thank our iX-partners for sharing their knowledge with us, and wish you all a constructive (digital) visit today. solution partners Bayer Crop Science provides a wide portfolio of products for the protection of crops against diseases pests and weeds. This overview mentions some of these products, available for protection of a range of vegetable crops in The Netherlands. Infinito® Fungicide with local-systemic properties fungicide based on two active ingredients. Very strong performance (preventive and curative) on oomycetes like downy mildew in lettuce (Bremia lactucae) and spinach (Peronospora farinosa) or white rust (Albugo candida) in cabbage. Rudis® Fungicide with a strong preventive and curative effect on a broad spectrum of fungal diseases (with the exception of oomycetes). Very good performance on diseases like powdery mildew (Erysiphe spp.), rust (Puccinia spp.) and Alternaria spp. Serenade® Biological fungicide / bactericide based on Bacillus amyloliquefaciens QST 713 with a very broad label for both foliar and soil applications. For the foliar application Serenade works as a contact fungicide on diseases like powdery mildew, alternaria and botrytis. In the soil the bacteria from Serenade will colonize the roots and protect the plant for diseases like Pythium spp. Serenade also acts like a bio-stimulant through various mechanisms.

Challenge® Herbicide for weed control in carrots, celeriac, fresh and dry peas and field beans. Control of annual broadleaved weeds, annual meadowgrass and cockspur. Challenge is a soil herbicide with a broad activity spectrum, active on moist and dry soils. Flipper® Biological contact insecticide based on carboxylic acid for usage in both conventional and organic farming. Controls sucking insects like aphids, thrips and whiteflies. Safe on most beneficial insects, no residue, no EU-MRL. At this moment Flipper can be used in all crops. Batavia® Insecticide with unique two-way systemic activity. Very effective on a broad spectrum of sucking insects and safe on most beneficial insects. Because the active ingredient is transported upwards and downwards in the vascular system of plants, Batavia is effective on hard-to-reach insects. Depending on the crop and the timing this goes for sucking insects on the leaves as well as the roots. The table below provides an overview of the registration of the products mentioned, in various vegetable crops as currently available in The Netherlands (status: August 2020). Information on registrations may change, visit the Bayer website (www.agro.bayer.nl) for the most up-to-date situation. solution partners Advanced Analytics for Irrigation and Crop Monitoring The recently released features in IrriMAX Live reveal the depth and activity of plant roots. This previously hard to interpret data is now presented in a graphical form, allowing the grower and agronomist to quickly understand the depths that roots are taking water from. This amazing tool leads to precise irrigation management scheduling, with the ability to compare the depths of water being applied - to the depths that roots are “drinking” from. Displaying data from Sentek’s Drill & Drop probes, the charts in IrriMAX Live software show the values at each 10cm depth – and can also be summed to show total water content in the soil. Too Much Water? Or Not Enough? Knowing real site and time-specific root activity, growers can now assess the effectiveness of every single irrigation event. Did the last irrigation apply too much water, too little or, was it just right?

If the irrigation depth percolates to the bottom of the roots and not beyond its reach - it is classified as “Perfect” and is indicated by a green coloured bar on top. However if the irrigation does not reach the bottom of the roots it is classified as “Under” and highlighted with a red top bar. Similarly if an over irrigation occurs (not shown here) the events is classified as “Over” with a blue top bar. Question of money. Benefits or Return on Investment Sentek Technologies’ mandate is to assist farmers with irrigation management by providing decision aiding tools. Why are we promoting improving water management on farm? It is all about the opportunity of minimizing inputs and maximizing outputs as Figure 1 summarizes. Approved Technology After 3 year of collaboration with Seminis with worldwide trials (USA, Netherlands, Turkey, Italy Hungary, France, Belgium) including Broccoli, Cauliflower, Tomato, Sweet Corn, Peppers, Onions, we demonstrated the benefit of the use of the technologies, and the clear return on investment. As for example last year with processing tomato in Italy, where we had trials, we compared field managed with Sentek probe with fields managed as usual by farmers. We had a visible difference were noticed for plant health and maturity concentration: And we demonstrated the water-saving of 1500 m3 /ha, saved 180 €/ha, with a plus in Brix (0.7) with a more attractive red colour!
