De 49 ‘Fotopeintures’ in deze catalogus zijn in diverse maten te bestellen. Het grootste gedeelte van deze ‘Fotopeintures’ zijn gemaakt op een formaat van ca. 150 cm (langste zijde). ‘Fotopeintures’ zijn door Pim Westerweel gemaakte en digitaal bewerkte foto’s. Het zijn dus eigenlijk ‘Lichtschilderijen’. Hij gebruikt zijn originele digitale bestanden/foto’s als palet om mee te schilderen. Door deze bewerking zijn de beelden ontdaan van hun fotografische werkelijkheid. Zijn hele leven lang heeft hij al foto’s analoog, later ook digitaal, bewerkt. Deze zijn gebruikt in reportages, platenhoezen en dessins voor textiel en papier. Foto’s bewerken is al zo oud als het ontstaan van de fotografie evenals foto’s die dienen als voorbeeld voor schilderijen. De analoge fotografische mogelijkheden met b.v. ‘doordrukken’ van wolken in de DOKA, gebruik van roodfilters bij zwart/wit fotografie, gebruik van infrarood films waren allemaal al middelen om de werkelijkheid te manipuleren. Zelfs de keuze maken van wat er wel in het beeld mag staan, en wat niet, is een verdraaiing van de werkelijkheid. Fotomontages waarin politieke ‘Kop’-stukken’ werden (en worden) vervangen laten een werkelijkheid zien die er niet is. De interpretatie van de werkelijkheid is dus altijd persoonlijk en bedrieglijk. Het digitale tijdperk heeft deze mogelijkheden gigantisch vergroot en heeft daarmee ook een grote invloed gehad op de nieuwsgaring, maar ook op de beeldende kunst.
Pim Westerweel – Zelfportret in glansplaat - 1958
De beelden die Pim Westerweel maakt of uit zijn archief haalt worden op een speciale manier gescand, bewerkt en opgeblazen tot 100x150 cm. Vervolgens beschildert hij deze beelden met digitale penselen van soms slechts 1 cm. breed. Hier is hij vaak 2 weken mee bezig. Met achtergrondmuziek van jazz tot klassiek, afhankelijk van onderwerp of uitstraling, laat hij zich beïnvloeden tot heftige scherpe streken of juist onscherpe zachte lijnen. Soms zijn deze heel expressionistisch en soms impressionistisch.
