1 Brabantse Wal The region derives its name, the Brabantse Wal, to the sandy ridge on the western edge of the province of NoordBrabant, that stretches from the Belgian border in the south to the town of Steenbergen in the north and Wouwse Plantage in the east. The area’s most striking feature is the vast diversity of its scenery. Transitions from clay soil to sand, from woodland to heath and from wet to dry render this area unique. The natural height differences are remarkable; the steep ridge appears in the countryside on the Belgian border near the town of Ossendrecht. Near Hoogerheide and Woensdrecht it rises to approximately 20 m above NAP (a Dutch sea level indication), decreases near Bergen op Zoom and Halsteren and disappears into the soil near de Kladde (Steenbergen). The wide diversity of scenery at the Brabantse Wal offers a habitat to various species of plant and animals. 2 De Binnenschelde De Binnenschelde is een recreatieplas die grenst aan woongebied de Bergse Plaat waar je kunt zwemmen, kanoën en windsurfen. Er is een strandzone aan gelegd met diverse facili teiten en er zijn aanlegsteigertjes. Ook is het een gewaardeerde spot bij kitesurfers. 2 The Inner Scheldt The Inner Scheldt is a leisure lake on the edge of residential area de Bergse Plaat which offers possibilities for swimming, canoeing and wind surfing. It features a beach area with various facilities and jetties. It is also a highly valued location for kite surfers. 3 Halsters Laag Het Halsters Laag is een bijzondere plek. Een laagte tussen twee noordelijke uitlopers van de Brabantse Wal, de hoge zandwal van België tot aan Steenbergen. Tegelijkertijd ligt het Halsters Laag in de overgangszone waar zand- en kleigronden elkaar raken: de Naad van Brabant. Hierdoor komt grondwater van heel goede kwaliteit (kwelwater) aan het oppervlak. Het Halsters Laag heeft daarom de status ‘Natte Natuurparel’ gekregen. Staatsbosbeheer spant zich samen met andere partijen in om het gebied in ere te herstellen. Een flinke bovenlaag met voedselrijke grond is in 2009 afgegraven, zodat de oorspronkelijke begroeiing van vóór de ontginning weer een kans krijgt in de 36 VVV Brabantse Wal ZIEN EN DOEN / See and discover voedsel arme ondergrond. Het Halsters Laag is een laaggelegen gebied dat bestaat uit (natte) graslanden, broekbosjes, elzensingels en poelen. Wandelen: In het Halsters Laag is een laarzenpad van vier kilometer uitgezet: het Frans-paadje. Deze wandeling leidt je door het prachtige gebied met twee gezichten. Vertrek: vanaf de parkeerplaats aan het Laageinde in Bergen op Zoom. Gratis folder verkrijgbaar bij VVV Brabantse Wal. 3 Halsters Laag Halsters Laag is a very special location. These lowlands lie between two spurs, protruding to the north from the Brabantse Wal, the high sandy ridge running from Belgium to Steenbergen. At the same time, Halsters Laag is located in the transition zone from sandy to clay soil: the Seam of Brabant. As a consequence, soil water of a high quality (seepage) rises to the surface. Therefore, Halsters Laag was awarded the status of ‘Natte Natuurparel’ (Wet Pearl of Nature). Together with other parties, the Dutch Forestry Commission, aims to restore the area. A thick layer of fertile soil was dug off in 2009, so the flora that was indigenous to the area before it was cultivated, will have a chance once again to take root in the unfertile subsoil. Halsters Laag are lowlands that consist of (wet) meadows, riparian woods, alder groves and puddles. Hiking: A four-kilometre welly-trail is signposted in Halsters Laag, it is called the French trail.
