appreciation and satisfaction, but also a deeper understanding of the role they could play in young people’s lives. With this insight, the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence resonated with an entirely new significance. Another thing that struck me as remarkable was that the workshops did not draw any distinction between Olympic and Paralympic athletes. I shall never forget the sight of Paralympic athlete Marlou van Rhijn sitting in front of the young athletes – many of whom still view disability as a taboo subject – and changing her prostheses for blades as if it was the most natural thing in the world, enabling the children to get used to the idea. I want to compliment NOC*NSF for not choosing the path of least resistance. Instead atletas também ganharam algo: apreciação e satisfação, mas também a consciência de que podem fazer a diferença na vida desses jovens. Os valores olímpicos de amizade, respeito e excelência ganharam um outro significado. Também foi muito especial o fato de que as oficinas não diferenciaram entre atletas olímpicos e paraolímpicos. Nunca vou me esquecer como Marlou van Rhijn, que, na presença de jovens atletas – que muitas vezes ainda encaram a deficiência como um tabu – substituiu suas próteses regulares pelas especiais (as blades) como se fosse a coisa mais natural do mundo para que as crianças se sentissem mais à vontade. Quero parabenizar o NOC*NSF por não optar pelo caminho mais fácil. Ao invés de apoiar projetos pontuais de ONGs, optaram por uma parceria de longo prazo com o governo municipal. Exigiu muita persistência e dedicação, mas como resultado contribuíam para o legado social sustentável. Quero também agradecer a todos os parceiros brasileiros, sem os quais esta parceria não seria possível. Agradeço à Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro, à Secretária de Educação e sua equipe e às Escolas GEO que participaram do projeto.
