Squares, courtyards, and alleys Every square, courtyard, and alley in Middelburg reveals a piece of city history. Explore these places and discover the unique side of the city. 8 WITNESSES OF TIME AND RECONSTRUCTION In the heart of Middelburg lies the Markt, once a medieval marketplace next to the former Westmonsterkerk. The square has undergone many changes over the centuries, especially after the devastating Second World War. Not far away is Plein 1940, which emerged as part of the reconstruction. Originally intended as a bus stop, it is now a lively place with cafes, restaurants, and events. Just behind the town hall, 'De Helm' reminds us of a historic inn that made way for the public outdoor lecture hall of University College Roosevelt (UCR), featuring statues of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. HISTORICAL COURTYARDS AND GATES At the foot of Lange Jan lies the courtyard "Onder den Toren," built in 1943 as part of the reconstruction. Equipped with homes for senior citizens featuring small windows, red roof tiles, and a tea pavilion in one corner, this courtyard was intended for poor, elderly ladies. Today, this historical site is recognized as a national monument. In Sint Pieterstraat, you'll find the Gistpoort, a late Gothic building that once served as the eastern entrance gate to the Abbey complex. It is also known as the Blauwe Poort or Blauwpoort due to the blue limestone in its construction. Another name is the 'Ankerpoort,' in homage to the brewery 'Den Anker,' which was once located on this site. Above the gate, three statues stand; one of them is Count Willem the Second, Count of Holland and Zeeland. STORIES OF TRADE AND TRADITION The Damplein is a lively tribute to the trading history of Middelburg, surrounded by old merchant houses, monuments, and a replica of the 18thcentury grain exchange. Once, the 16th-century harbor with the striking Prins Hendrikdok was located here. On the Vismarkt, accessible via the Sint Janstraat, you'll find an oasis of tranquility on the small square with cobblestones and chestnut trees. The Reigerstraat holds a prominent place on the list of the 'most photographed streets in Middelburg.' Every year, entrepreneurs adorn this street in the city center with cheerful decorations, such as lanterns, umbrellas, or 'Christmas baubles'. The Abbey Tower De Lange Jan in the background completes the picture. MIDDELBURG IN VIDEO AND 3D The history of Middelburg is plain to see in many places.
