the numbers and species of birds that breed or spend their migration season there, this giant marshland is considered to be the most important wetland of the Netherlands. It was even designated as a valuable European Heritage site in the ‘Natura 2000 programme’ . Hiking: Lake Marquisate is partly open to the public from visitors centre Kraaijenberg (Crow´s mountain). Two trails start at the edge of Lake Marquisate near the visitors centre; a yellow trail around the Kraaijenberg and a white trail to the bird watching cabin which offers a fine overview of the marshland. 12 Zoommeer Het zoete Zoommeer dat grenst aan de Schelde-Rijnverbinding is een meer waar veel te doen is, zowel op als langs het water. Vissers, zeilers, kanoërs en surfers bevolken dit meer en er is een waterskibaan aan de Speelmansplaten vlakbij de Bergse Diepsluis. Het Zoommeer biedt schepen toegang tot de haven van Bergen op Zoom via een openstaande sluis en een klapbrug. 12 Zoommeer (Lake Zoom) Fresh water Zoommeer is adjacent tot the Scheldt-Rhine waterway and a lake which offers a lot of leisure activities, both on and around the water. Angling, sailing, canoeing and surfing is what you will see on this lake and there is also a water skiing track at Speelmansplaten near Bergse Diepsluis. Zoommeer allows ships access to Bergen op Zoom´s harbour by means of an open lock and a lift bridge. 13 Grenspark De Zoom / Kalmthoutse Heide Grenspark De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide is een grensoverschrijdend natuurgebied van 6000 hectare, met heide, vennen, stuifduinen, weilanden en bossen. Vooral de ecologische en cultuurhistorische waarden maken het gebied uniek. In 2011 is het project om beide heidegebieden met elkaar te verbinden en grote zandduinen te herstellen, afgerond. Er ligt nu een robuust, grenzeloos natuurreservaat waar dieren zoals de gladde slang, nachtzwaluw en boomleeuwerik van profiteren. Ossendrechtse Duinen is een onderdeel van het Nationaal Park Grenspark De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide. Wandelen: In het Grenspark liggen verschillende wandelpaden. Met wandelroute Haas (4,6 km) kun je het natuurgebied Ossendrechtse Duinen bewonderen en van het uitzicht genieten op de grote open heidevlaktes. Natuurpoort de Volksabdij Ossendrecht is het knooppunt voor vele fiets- en wandelroutes. Het wandelpad Abdij start hier en leidt je door het parkbos, bos, heide en vennen. De kaart met alle wandelroutes is bij VVV Brabantse Wal verkrijgbaar. 13 Border park De Zoom / Kalmthoutse Heide Border Park De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide is nature conservation area of 6,000 hectares. It includes heath, pools, drifting sands, meadows and woodlands. The area is unique because of its ecological value and cultural history. In 2011 a project to link two heath lands and restore large inland dunes, is wrapped up. Many animals, such as smooth snake, nightjar and woodlark will benefit from the cross-border, solid nature conservation area. Ossendrechtse Duinen is a part of National Park Border Park De Zoom – Kalmthoutse Heide. Hiking: There are various trails in the Border Park. Hiking trail Haas (Hare) (4,6 km) will offer you a nice overview of nature conservation area Ossendrechtse Duinen. You can also enjoy the view of large open heath lands. Hiking trail Abdij (Abbey) will guide you from Volksabdij O.L.V ter Duinen through the park woods, forests, heaths and along the pools.
