Deze waterlinie, onderdeel van de Zuiderwaterlinie, is ontworpen om meerdere Europese legers tegen te houden, o.a. in de Tachtigjarige Oorlog (1568-1648). Dit is de eerste linie waar het inunderen (=onder water zetten) werd gebruikt om de vijand buiten te houden. De oudste waterlinie van Nederland wordt nu in ere hersteld. Nu en in de toekomst is deze linie een prachtige omgeving om te fietsen, wandelen, varen en gewoon te genieten! Land and water, past and present meet at the West Brabantse Waterlinie. This defence line of fortifications with floodable areas in between used to belong to the Zuiderwaterlinie. It was designed to stop various European enemy armies in wars such as the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648) when the Dutch fought the Spaniards. This was the first defence line even to use inundation (=flooding) to keep the enemy out. The water defence line is currently being restored. Now and in the future, this line will provide an attractive countryside for biking, hiking, sailing and just enjoying! Waterschans (1584) Het oudste deel van de West Brabantse Waterlinie is gebouwd ter verdediging van oude haven van de vesting Bergen op Zoom. In de loop van de tijd is de vorm bijna verdwenen. De Waterschans is onlangs in ere hersteld en toegankelijk voor publiek. The oldest part of the West Brabantse Waterlinie was built to defend the old harbour of the Bergen op Zoom stronghold. Over time, its shape nearly disappeared from the scenery. The Waterschans was currently restored and is accessible to visitors. WEST BRABANTSE WATERLINIE / West Brabant’s water defences Ravelijn ‘Op den Zoom’ (1703) In Nederland zijn slechts twee vestingwerken van de hand van de beroemde vestingbouwer Menno van Coehoorn in totaliteit bewaard gebleven. Een daarvan is het Ravelijn ‘Op den Zoom’. Te bereiken via de bijzondere drijvende brug. Only two complete fortifications designed by the famous stronghold architect Menno van Coehoorn have survived in the Netherlands. One of these is Ravelijn ‘Op den Zoom’. Accessible by means of a unique floating bridge. Vesting Bergen op Zoom Bergen op Zoom is, gezien haar ligging, altijd van groot strategisch belang geweest. De stad ligt op een zandrug met aan weerskanten daarvan oorspronkelijk lage gronden met waterpartijen en moerassen. De stad werd beschouwd als de ‘Sleutel van Zeeland’. In view of its location, Bergen op Zoom has always been of great strategic importance. The city is located on a sandy ridge with - originally- lowlands on either side that comprise wetlands and marshes. The city was considered to be the ‘Key to Zeeland’. Fort de Roovere (1628) De aarden wallen en grachten van dit fort zijn nog duidelijk herkenbaar. Een grote publiekstrekker is hier de Mozesof loopgraafbrug en de spectaculaire uitkijktoren ‘Pompejus’. The earth walls and canals of this fortress are well recog nizable in the scenery nowadays.
