1 Brabantse Wal The region derives its name, the Brabantse Wal, to the sandy ridge on the western edge of the province of NoordBrabant, that stretches from the Belgian border in the south to the town of Steenbergen in the north and Wouwse Plantage in the east. The area’s most striking feature is the vast diversity of its scenery. Transitions from clay soil to sand, from woodland to heath and from wet to dry render this area unique. The natural height differences are remarkable; the steep ridge appears in the countryside on the Belgian border near the town of Ossendrecht. Near Hoogerheide and Woensdrecht it rises to approximately 20 m above NAP (a Dutch sea level indication), decreases near Bergen op Zoom and Halsteren and disappears into the soil near de Kladde (Steenbergen). The wide diversity of scenery at the Brabantse Wal offers a habitat to various species of plant and animals. 2 Het Markiezaatsmeer Tussen het bosrijke heuvelland van de Brabantse Wal en het druk bevaren Schelde-Rijnkanaal ligt het Markiezaatsmeer. Een prachtig zoetwatermoeras in ontwikkeling, ontstaan door de afsluiting van de Oosterschelde met de Markiezaatskade in 1984. Door de aantallen soorten vogels die er broeden of in de trektijd verblijven, wordt dit reusachtige moeras beschouwd als Nederlands belangrijkste ‘wetland’ en is zelfs aangewezen als waardevol Europees erfgoed ‘Natura2000gebied’. Wandelen: Het Markiezaatsmeer is vanaf bezoekerscentrum de Kraaijenberg gedeeltelijk te betreden. Op de rand van het Markiezaatsmeer starten bij het bezoekerscentrum twee routes; een gele route rond de Kraaijenberg, en een witte route naar de vogelkijkhut die een goed beeld van het moerasgebied geeft. Vertrek: Fianestraat 21 in Bergen op Zoom. 2 Lake Marquisate Lake Marquisate is located amidst the wooded hills of the Brabantse Wal and the Scheldt-Rhine channel with its busy shipping traffic. It is a beautiful fresh water marshland taking shape, as it only developed after the Eastern Scheldt river was closed off by the Markiezaatskade in 1984. Because of the numbers and species of birds that breed or spend their migration season there, this giant marshland is considered to be the most important wetland of the Netherlands. It was even designated as a valuable European Heritage site in the ‘Natura 2000 programme’ . Hiking: Lake Marquisate is partly open to the public from visitors centre Kraaijenberg (Crow´s mountain). Two trails start at the edge of Lake Marquisate near the visitors centre; a yellow trail around the Kraaijenberg and a white trail to the bird watching cabin which offers a fine overview of the marshland. 3 Zoommeer Het zoete Zoommeer dat grenst aan de Schelde-Rijnverbinding is een meer waar veel te doen is, zowel op als langs het water. Vissers, zeilers, kanoërs en surfers bevolken dit meer en er is een waterskibaan aan de Speelmansplaten vlakbij de Bergse Diepsluis. Het Zoommeer biedt schepen toegang tot de haven van Bergen op Zoom via een openstaande sluis en een klapbrug. 3 Zoommeer (Lake Zoom) Fresh water Zoommeer is adjacent tot the Scheldt-Rhine waterway and a lake which offers a lot of leisure activities, both on and around the water. Angling, sailing, canoeing and surfing is what you will see on this lake and there is also a water skiing track at Speelmansplaten near Bergse Diepsluis. Zoommeer allows ships access to Bergen op Zoom´s harbour by means of an open lock and a lift bridge. 4 De Binnenschelde De Binnenschelde is een recreatieplas die grenst aan woongebied de Bergse Plaat waar je kunt zwemmen, kanoën en windsurfen. Er is een strandzone aan gelegd met diverse facili teiten en er zijn aanlegsteigertjes. Ook is het een gewaardeerde spot bij kitesurfers. Wandelen: Rond de Binnenschelde loopt een route langs het water van ongeveer 7 kilometer. Ook is het mogelijk om deze route te fietsen. 4 The Inner Scheldt The Inner Scheldt is a leisure lake on the edge of residential area de Bergse Plaat which offers possibilities for swimming, canoeing and wind surfing. It features a beach area with various facilities and jetties. It is also a highly valued location for kite surfers.
