16 Staartse Heide 18 Mattemburgh Staartse Heide is part of Border Park Kalmthoutse Heide. It consists of mixed forest, some height differences (which are typical for the Brabantse Wal) and heath lands. A large plot of woodland was felled at Staartse Heide, also known as the ‘large linking zone’. It connects the areas Ossendrechtse Duinen and Kleine Meer (owned by Natuurmonumenten) and Kortenhoeff. Realizing this linking zone was achieved by cooperation with the Border Park. Staartse Heide is an important area for the nightjar. It is expected that the smooth snake will also settle in the area, as this animal will probable benefit from the lay out of the linking zone. Hiking: There are two signposted hiking trails: Vos (Fox, 3.3 km) and Ree (Roe, cross-border, 7.6 km) These trails can be linked up. 17 Moretusbos Het Moretusbos is een juweel van een parkbos op de grens met België. Het bos maakt deel uit van de Brabantse Wal en heeft een rijke cultuurhistorie. Die komt tot uiting in de rechte lanen en sterke verhalen. Wandelen: Bij de ingang via de Canadalaan / Oud Broek vind je een informatiepaneel en start de wandelroute “Het pronkstuk van de jonker”, deze route is ongeveer 3,5 km lang en gemarkeerd met rode plaatjes van de Gloriëtte. Langs de route staan informatieborden bij de belangrijke, cultuurhistorische elementen. Vertrek: Oud Broek in Stabroek – Putte. 17 Moretus woods Moretusbos is a splendid park wood on the Belgian border. The wood is part of Brabantse Wal and boasts a rich cultural history, which is expressed by the straight avenues and tall stories. Hiking: At the entrance Canadalaan / Oudbroek you will see an information panel and the start of the trail “Het pronkstuk van de jonker” (The squire’s showpiece). This trail is about 3.5 km long and marked with red pictures of the Gloriëtte. Along the trail you will find information signs near sites with an important cultural history. Landgoed Mattemburgh ligt ten zuiden van Bergen op Zoom en is eigendom van Brabants Landschap. Mattemburgh wordt gerekend tot de vijf gaafst bewaard gebleven stijltuinen van ons land. Het oudste bosreservaat van ons land, waar al ruim 100 jaar doelbewust geen onderhoud meer plaatsvindt, maakt onderdeel uit van het landgoed. Op het landgoed zijn twee tuinstijlen. Rond de villa uit 1847 ligt een tuin in Engelse Landschapsstijl. Kronkelende paden, slingervijvers, verrassende doorkijkjes, een Chinees bruggetje en klassieke standbeelden. Hoogtepunt van deze tuin, letterlijk en figuurlijk, vormt een theekoepel op een kunstmatige verhoging. Onder de koepel bevindt zich een voormalige ijskelder, die nu dienst doet als winterverblijfplaats voor vleermuizen. De Franse tuin is heel anders van stijl. De bomen en heggen zijn strak geschoren. Twee rijen van reusachtige kuipen, met daarin citroen- en sinaasappelboompjes, sommige van wel 100 jaar oud, leiden naar restaurant Orangerie Mattemburgh. Wandelen: Er zijn 2 wandelroutes uitgezet door het bosgebied. De Franse en Engelse tuin zijn vrij toegankelijk, voor toegangstijden zie pagina 17. Vertrek: Beukendreef in Hoogerheide 18 Mattemburgh Mattemburgh country estate is located to the south of Bergen op Zoom and owned by Brabants Landschap. Mattemburgh is regarded to be one of the five best preserved formal gardens of our country. It includes the oldest forest nature reserve of the Netherlands. No maintenance is executed, which is a well-considered decision. You will find two different garden styles at the estate. The villa that was built in 1847 is surrounded by a garden in English Landscape style. It features winding paths, meandering ponds, unexpected vistas, a Chinese bridge and classical statues. A tea house on an artificial rise is the summit of these gardens, in a truly literal and metaphorical sense. Below the rise you will find a former icehouse which now serves as a hibernation room for bats. The French garden has a totally different style. Trees and hedges are neatly trimmed. Two rows of giant tubs are filled with lemon and orange trees – some of them over 100 years old – and lead to restaurant the Orangery.
