“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” NL In Nederland produceren we jaarlijks bijna 490 kilo afval per persoon, zonder dat dit opvalt. De enorme vuilnisbelten die ik mij nog uit mijn kindertijd kan herinneren, zijn de afgelopen decennia cosmetisch weggepoetst met sport- en recreatieterreinen. Is dit slecht? Menig archeoloog knijpt in z’n handen als er een vuilstort uit de prehistorie wordt ontdekt. Ontnemen wij, met onze recycledrift, toekomstige archeologen of buitenaardse beschavingen het plezier van te mogen graven en snuffelen in onze prullenbak? Gelukkig zijn er nog plekken waar we ongegeneerd ons afval dumpen, omdat we blijkbaar tot het tegendeel bewezen is, altijd zullen denken dat ons afval zichzelf op magische wijze weg zal toveren. Deze nieuwe vuilstort bevindt zich buiten de dampkring, in de oneindige ruimte. Hier zweeft al ruim een half miljoen kilo afval rond, en dat terwijl we nog maar aan het begin staan van onze deep space-expansiedrift. The huge rubbish dumps that I can still remember from my youth have been cosmetically tidied up over recent decades and turned into sports and recreation areas. Is this so bad? Many an archaeologist would rub his hands in glee when a prehistoric spoil heap was uncovered. With our passion for recycling, are we depriving future archaeologists – or extra-terrestrial civilisations – of the pleasure of being able to dig up and root around in our rubbish bins? Fortunately, perhaps, there are still some places where we continue relentlessly dumping our waste because we seem to think, until the contrary is proven, that our waste will somehow magically make itself disappear.
