The Problem: Inactivity, childhood obesity, sedentary lifestyles The Facts… • 30% of children aged between two and fifteen years are overweight or obese (Department of Health, 2013). • Out of 2000 children, 1 in 5 youngsters do not go outside to play (Play England, 2007). • 7 out of 10 children feel that playing in an outside space is a real treat (Play England, 2007). • Physical Inactivity in England is estimated to cost the government £8.2 billion a year and this is predicted to rise (Department of Health, 2004). • 40 – 60% of children over 6 years spend less than 1 hour a day doing moderate intensity activities (Smithers et al 2000).
