Case Studies GlaxoSmithKline, Ulverston, Cumbria GlaxoSmithKline in Ulverston added a fantastic new Matterhorn Plus Mountain Tower to their play area, upgrading their existing Playdale equipment which had been there for over 15 years. They wanted to update the play area with something more modern and Playdale’s Matterhorn Plus was the perfect fit. They also upgraded the swings and added some fast-paced Movers equipment to create an exciting playground for children to enjoy. The end result was fantastic and it is has breathed new life into the play area that is a popular destination for families in the area. Michael Wagstaff, Project Manager at GlaxoSmithKline, said: “We’re really happy with the project, it looks really good. It’s manufactured to a high standard and the children really enjoy playing on it.” Double Tree by Hilton Hotel, Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates Our distributor in the United Arab Emirates managed the installation of a Playdale i.play system at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel on Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. There are a number of pieces of Playdale equipment already installed and enjoyed at this site and they were looking for a new exciting addition to cater for a wide age range. Playdale’s intelligent, electronic play system; the i.play, was presented and suggested to the hotel’s management team as they wanted to have some unique recreational equipment in the hotel. The i.play was the first electronic outdoor playground unit that has revolutionised the outdoor play industry. It is visionary, revolutionary, healthy and represents a significant breakthrough in outdoor play. It combines interactive electronics with conventional playground equipment and its main aim was to break the vicious cycle of sedentary behaviour associated with electronic games. Embankment Equipment All Playdale embankment play is manufactured at a variety of lengths, starting from units made to fit a 1.3m high mound. Embankment slides utilise an existing bank or mound. We recommend that measurements of your mound or slope should be taken before a decision is made to install any embankment equipment. Research & Development Design Brief Develop a whole body, health enhancing electronic play product designed to attract and engage a user group which is more accustomed to playing computer games than participating in physical activity. The product must be suitable for outdoor playgrounds, vandal resistant, DDA compliant and environmentally friendly. At this point the i.play concept won the Academic Challenge Award 2006 - Winner of the Best in Health Category. Run by the Technical University of Munich, the awards recognise innovative design concepts with real world applications. Designing The Unit Ergonomic analysis has been conducted to ensure that activity switches are positioned to target specific muscle groups of a wide range of children including wheelchair users. Prototype Testing This was an essential stage in the process to enable us to assess the validity of the initial concept. The Science Key Facts Alongside PST we have conducted extensive research using state of the art equipment to determine interesting facts about how and why i.play helps to combat childhood obesity. • A total of 43 children were involved in the comprehensive experimental process on i.play. • 185 metres covered per child in an average game of i.play. • On average a child’s heart rate can reach 80% of their theoretical maximum during a game of i.play. • 86% of children thought i.play was “definitely better” than existing playground equipment. • 72% of children said that if i.play was in their local park then it would definitely encourage them to play there more often. • A child weighing 45 kg will expend approximately 30 Kcals during a single game on i.play. • Playing on i.play for 5 minutes will burn off more calories than playing tennis for 5 minutes or swimming front crawl for 5 minutes. Case Studies Walkers invest in 21st Century Playgrounds with Playdale ‘Parks for Life’ We were invited to an international tender by PepsiCo Ltd for Walkers to be involved in an exciting new project ‘Parks for Life’. Safer Surfacing When providing a safe environment for children to play in, the surface on which they play is particularly important. We all know that from time to time children will accidentally fall from even the safest piece of equipment when playing. The purpose of safer surfacing is to cushion the impact of a child’s accidental fall and reduce the severity of an injury. To meet the requirements of BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177, Playdale recommend that impact absorbing surfaces must be installed beneath all equipment with a free height of fall greater than 0.6m. We offer a wide range of safer surfacing, including Wet Pour, tiles, synthetic grass and loosefill. In some circumstances a well maintained natural grass surface can be considered as a safer surface up to a free fall height of 1.5m. The appropriate surfacing for your site will depend on several factors; type of equipment, cost, durability, aesthetic appearance, maintenance, local ground and climatic conditions. Our Area Managers can advise you on all aspects of safer surfacing. All surfacing offered by Playdale has been independently tested to ensure full compliance with BS EN 1177 and BS 7188. GrassLok GrassLok consists of 0.5m x 0.5m interlocking recycled PVC / rubber tiles designed specifically for use as safety surfacing underneath play equipment. The tiles allow existing grass to grow through, which can then be mown as usual. GrassLok can provide a critical fall height (CFH) of up to 3m. However, the CFH is dependant on site specific factors such as soil type, soil moisture levels and grass growth, our Area Managers can advise you on this. Wet Pour Wet Pour is a continuous rubber surface that gives a high quality, hard wearing, slip-resistant surface requiring little or no maintenance. Mixed on site, the rubber EPDM granule and polyurethane resin mixture is wet laid to various thicknesses onto a prepared area. The thickness and area of Wet Pour is determined by the free height of fall of the equipment installed. The correct thickness and area of Wet Pour is laid around each piece of equipment to provide a sufficient level of impact absorbency. Wet Pour is available in a range of colours. Although the standard colour is black, a coloured fleck can be added to enhance appearance of the finished area. Coloured shapes, logos and floor games can be laid into the surface to give an individual theme and provide additional play value. Wet Pour complies with BS EN 1177 and BS 7188. Loosefill Loosefill safer surfacing has excellent impact absorbing properties and combines well with many units to give a warm, natural appearance. The capital cost of loosefill surfacing is far less than Wet Pour and tiles, however maintenance costs (i.e. raking and topups) should be taken into account. To meet the requirements of BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177, all Playdale loosefill surfaces should be maintained to the correct depth as specified. The use of raised loosefill areas will aid drainage. Cushionfall This is an environmentally friendly surface, produced from recycled timber products. The shredded timber gives excellent impact absorbing properties and is provided in a variety of colours. Playgrade Bark This high quality graded pine bark gives an attractive surface, which is well suited to most locations and for use with the majority of equipment. Sand In some situations playgrade sand is an effective loosefill surface. It is also a play medium in its own right. Gravel Gravel can also provide an attractive and safe loosefill surface option. Matta Tiles An open mesh tile surface constructed from prefabricated, interlocking tiles 500mm x 500mm made from recycled rubber & PVC. Safety Matta This system is designed to promote maximum grass growth to create an aesthetically pleasing installation that blends in to the environment. Once the grass is established it can be simply mowed over as usual. The Safety Matta system consists of two separate layers, a mesh underlay and the rubber & PVC mats. Each of the products in this catalogue specifies the fixing options available. Steel Ground Fixing This is a high strength, highly durable system for installing playground equipment. Galvanised steel brackets are secured to the timber poles lifting them clear of the surface. The steel brackets are then concreted into holes in the ground. Our design layouts and installations also comply with the European Standards EN 1176 and 1177. The high quality of all our materials is continually monitored through our ISO 9001 certified Quality Assurance Procedures to ensure all the following specifications are met and are of a consistent quality. Laminated Timber Poles All high quality, round timber poles on Playdale equipment are produced from extremely slow grown pine from totally sustainable, managed forests with FSC or PEFC accreditation. Laminated timber vastly reduces the natural effect of fibre separation that causes splits in the poles - giving high strength, highly engineered timber poles. Laminated timber (Glulam) sections are produced according to EN386:2001. Extremely smooth, high quality machined finish in 140mm, 130mm, 120mm, 112mm, 100mm, 88mm and 70mm diameters. The glued joint is even stronger than the timber itself. Strict quality control ensures consistency through continual tests during the production process. All protruding edges are finished with a machined radius to give a smooth and splinter free finish in accordance with EN 1176. Extent of impact area 1.5m 1.5m 1.57m 1.63m 1.70m 1.77m 1.83m 1.90m 1.97m 2.03m 2.10m 2.17m 2.23m 2.30m 2.37m 2.43m 2.50m The extent of the impact area is dependent on the free height of fall. If the free height of fall is between 0.6m and 1.5m the extent of the impact area = 1.5m. If free height of fall is between 1.5 and 3m, the extent of the impact area increases proportionately according to the adjacent table. Note 1: Extent of impact area must allow for movement of equipment i.e. chains and ropes at full stretch. Note 2: Impact areas for specific types of equipment i.e. swings, slides, runways, carousels and rocking equipment have different requirements from the above. Playdale’s guidelines on spacing of play units to BS EN 1176: Area required should be taken as the loosefill edging board shown on plans. Equipment should be positioned a minimum of 1.8m away from fencing, walls, trees, etc. Fencing, walls, trees, etc MUST NOT be inside the impact area. This means that fencing around high fall height units need to be more than 1.8m away from equipment. Impact areas Free spaces s areas of two adjacent units CAN overlap. and impact MUST NOT overlap. Unit spacing boundaries MUST NOT overlap. Free Space (Layer 10): The space in, on or around the equipment that can be occupied by a user undergoing a movement forced by the equipment (i.e. swinging, sliding, rocking). Loosefill Area (Layer 04): Extent of loosefill safer surfacing required for this unit, also the minimum area required. If loosefill surfacing is used it must be installed to a layer thickness of 100mm more than the thickness found to give sufficient Critical Fall Height (CFH). This is to allow for displacement through use. All loosefill materials specified by Playdale have been tested to BS EN 1176 and give sufficient CFH for 100mm thickness, therefore in excess of 200mm is specified (250mm). CFH: Critical Fall Height: The limit of free height of fall for which the surfacing provides acceptable levels of impact absorbency. The unit spacing boundary has been positioned 1.25m from the extremity of the equipment, allowing for movement. Therefore two linked units will be at least 2.5m apart. Please note that the above rule does not apply to Adventure Trail units, which are designed to be linked by log walks. Edging Rule 1: Raised edging MUST be positioned outside the impact area and a minimum of 1.8m from the extremity of the equipment, allowing for movement of moving parts, i.e. chains, ropes, etc. Rule 2: Flush edging should be positioned outside the impact area and a minimum of 1.0m from the extremity of the equipment, allowing for movement of moving parts, i.e. chains, ropes, etc. BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177 safer surfacing requirements: 1) If free height of fall is over 600mm, surfacing giving a sufficient CFH is required. 2) Surfacing giving a sufficient CFH, i.e. exceeding the free height of fall of the unit must cover the whole of the impact area. 3) If free height of fall is below 600mm equipment can be installed on grass or a wear and tear surface. 4) If the existing grass is of good quality and meets certain criteria following assessment by a competent person the grass can be used as an impact absorbing surface with CFH of 1.5m 5) Any play equipment, regardless of fall height, should not be installed directly onto concrete or tarmac unless a risk assessment is carried out and shows it to be acceptable (this may depend on the type of equipment). 190 Technical Information
