‘I’m proud of the Dutch National Olympic Committee, which launched its multi-year partnership with the city of Rio de Janeiro back in 2012. The underlying philosophy is that we’re not just interested in medals, but also seek to achieve a wider positive impact on Brazilian society. Giving as well as getting, in other words. The Dutch project was unique. To my knowledge, no other national Olympic Committee has undertaken a long-term commitment of this kind in the run-up to the Games. It was inspiring to see Dutch Olympic medallists giving workshops for days on end to children from the favelas, mostly out of sight of the cameras – to watch them getting the best out of these children and boosting their confidence. The athletes also got a lot out of the experience themselves: not just É motivo de orgulho para mim que o Comitê Olímpico Holandês, ainda em 2012, tenha iniciado uma parceria de vários anos com a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, preocupados não apenas em ganhar medalhas, mas também com o impacto social na sociedade brasileira. Acho que nenhum outro Comitê Olímpico teve um compromisso tão duradouro quanto o nosso durante o período de preparação para os Jogos. Foi de grande inspiração ver como os medalhistas olímpicos holandeses se dedicaram dia após dia às oficinas para as crianças de comunidades carentes, muitas vezes longe dos holofotes, extraindo o melhor das crianças e inflando sua autoconfiança.
