There is plenty to do in and around Grou! If you visit the village, you will find a lot of fun with shops and hospitality venues. Grou is located on the shores of the popular Pikmeer lake. Not much further away is the Alde Feanen National Park. You can walk, cycle and sail there. There are also wonderful excursions available. The title ‘National Park’ indicates how important this 2,500-hectare area is for animals and plants. Grou is centrally located in Friesland and is therefore an ideal base for visiting the eleven cities. For example, to view the eleven fountains that clatter, spout, spray or bubble in the cities. These fountains are part of an international art project, which has been placed within the framework of Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018, European Capital of Culture. History of Grou Grou, like so many Frisian villages, originated on a mound in the early Middle Ages. The village was initially focused on agriculture. From the 15th century, it increasingly focused on trade and shipping. As a result, the village grew considerably. In the 19th century, the importance of shipping declined, but this was well compensated for by the arrival of good road and rail connections. In the course of the 20th century, the village increasingly focused on water sports and tourism. Grou hat jetzt fast sechstausend Einwohner und ist ein Dorf, das sich ab dem Monat Mai wieder voll und ganz dem Wassersport widmet.
