the wo nder fu l wo rld of Suri name Geachte lezers, Het is voor mij een hele eer om als buitenlandse gast in deze editie 11 van het I love Suriname Magazine te mogen vertellen over mijn Suriname avonturen, grote passie voor de natuur en natuurfotografie. Ware passie en liefde voor de natuur, dat is wat Dick Lock elf jaar geleden voor het eerst naar Suriname bracht. Hij vindt het belangrijk zo veel mogelijk tijd in de natuur en vooral met dieren bezig te zijn. Maar hij haalt ook enorm veel voldoening uit het gidsen van kennismaken met het bos en deelt met hen de ware pracht van moeder natuur. Dick vertelt. Als jongeman wist ik al snel welke richting ik op wilde. Natuur, wildlife, educatie en voornamelijk in Zuid-Amerika. In Nederland heb ik de studies Ecology & Wildlife en Animal Management genoten met een major in Wildlife Management en een minor in Adventure Tourism, de perfecte basis die ik nodig had om te doen wat ik wilde. Na het afronden van mijn studies in 2017 wilde ik mij ontplooien in toerisme. De eerste jaren heb ik als freelance gids gewerkt en het meeste van mijn werk uitgevoerd onder de vlag van SU4You en Fred Ecotours, en dat heeft mij een enorme boost gegeven in mijn ontwikkeling in Suriname. Suriname is een land vol mogelijkheden en ik wilde niet aan andermans brood gaan zitten. Dus ik wilde me focussen op een niche die nog vrij was. True passion and love for nature brought Dick Lock to Suriname for the first time eleven years ago. He values spending as much time as possible in nature, especially with animals. However, he also derives immense satisfaction from guiding others, introducing them to the forest, and sharing the true beauty of mother nature with them. Let Dick tell his story. As a young man, I quickly knew which direction I wanted to take – nature, wildlife, education, mainly in South America. In the Netherlands, I pursued studies in Ecology & Wildlife and Animal Management, with a major in Wildlife Management and a minor in Adventure Tourism – the perfect foundation for what I wanted to do. After completing my studies in 2017, I wanted to flourish in tourism. In the initial years, I worked as a freelance guide, mostly under the banner of SU4You and Fred Ecotours, providing a significant boost to my development in Suriname. Suriname is a land full of possibilities, and I did not want to depend on others. So, I decided to focus on an untapped niche. WILDLIFE HERPING SURINAME M ijn voornaamste passie ligt bij herpetofauna, dat wil zeggen reptielen en amfibieën, een markt voor toerisme die in Suriname nog helemaal vrij was. Ik besloot Herping Suriname (www.herpingsuriname.com) op te zetten en tours te organiseren voor mensen die specifieke reptielen en amfibieën willen zien. Met regelmaat krijg ik een flinke soortenlijst doorgestuurd van mensen en op basis daarvan stel ik een op maat gemaakte rondreis samen waarin we de grootste kans hebben deze soorten te zien. Niet alleen in Suriname, maar binnenkort ook in Guyana en Frans Guyana. ////////////////////////// M y main passion is herpetofauna, the world of reptiles and amphibians, and in Suriname that world had not yet been disclosed for tourists. Goede literatuur over deze dieren in de drie Guyana’s – dat zijn Guyana, Suriname en Frans-Guyana – is heel beperkt. Guyana heeft nog geen enkel boek, Suriname heeft enkele verouderde of incomplete boeken en Frans Guyana heeft alleen een slangenboek in het Frans. Al jaren speelde ik met het idee een boek te maken over de reptielen en amfibieën van Suriname. Maar waarom niet groter denken? As we speak ben ik in samenwerking met Matthijs Kuijpers (REPTILES4ALL), een wereldbekende natuurfotograaf, bezig een boek te maken over de herpetofauna van de drie Guyana’s! D uring these tours sometimes I find types of amphibians I haven’t seen before. Looking them up can be difficult because there is not much literature on these animals in ‘the three Guyanas’. There are no books on Guyana yet, Suriname has a few but these are outdated and/or incomplete, and French Guyana only has one book on snakes in French. So I’d been thinking about writing a book on reptiles and amphibians in Suriname for a while. But why not think bigger? As we speak, I’m working together with world famous nature photographer Matthijs Kuijpers (REPTILES4ALL), on a book about herpetofauna in the three Guyanas with the best possible photos! Ik vind alles in de natuur interessant. Wanneer ik op zoek ben naar slangen of kikkers, H ou ik natuurlijk ook een oogje open voor andere dieren. En ik krijg steeds vaker aanvragen van mensen die niet alleen de herpetofauna willen bekijken maar ook andere soorten wildlife. Om deze reden heb ik Unlock Nature (www.unlocknature. tours) opgericht met Lieke Verwoerd, die ik ontmoet heb tijdens 14-daagse een expeditie naar de Tafelberg. We hebben een organisatie opgericht voor en door mensen met passie voor de natuur. We werken met gepassioneerde en professionele gidsen die de natuur kunnen ontsluiten (unlock) voor iedereen die daar belangstelling voor heeft. Zo bieden we korte trips aan voor mensen die een dagje of avondje willen kennismaken met de natuur. Of we organiseren wildlife-reizen op maat voor mensen die bepaalde dieren willen zien. En voor de echte avonturiers organiseren en begeleiden we langere expedities naar volledig ongerepte gebieden! I’m interested in everything nature has to offer. When looking for snakes or frogs, I always keep an eye out for other animals. More and more people requested to see not only herpetofauna, but other wildlife too. 14 14 II And so I founded Unlock Nature (www.unlocknature. tours) together with Lieke Verwoerd, whom I met during 14-day expedition to Table Mountain. We are an organization by and for people with a passion for nature. We work with passionate and professional guides that can ‘unlock’ nature in tailor-made tours for anybody who wishes to have this experience. We offer short trips for people who wish to spend a day or a night in nature. We have tours for those a wish to spot specific animals in the wild. Jungle of Suriname M et 93% bos heeft Suriname een enorm oppervlakte waar nog nooit mensen zijn geweest. Puur ongerept bos met eindeloze potentie voor echte avonturiers. We kunnen het zo extreem maken als je maar wilt. Een dropping met een helikopter in the middle of nowhere op een zandbank langs de rivier en wekenlang peddelen met een opblaaskano naar de bewoonde wereld? Het kan! Een van de expedities was een tour van elf dagen per boot over de Lucie Rivier. We vlogen naar het kleine Trio-Indianendorp Amatopo aan de Corantijn rivier, dicht bij de grens van Guyana. Vanaf daar vertrokken we met de boot de Lucie Rivier op. De eerste dertig kilometer hadden we bijna nonstop stroomversnellingen … de boot uit, slepen door de stroming, terug de boot in en enkele meters verderop weer herhalen. Hier waren de skills van de Trio-bootsmannen onmisbaar en zeer indrukwekkend om te zien! Na twee dagen hard werken en slepen kwamen we op een gedeelte van de rivier waar maar weinig mensen zich ooit begeven hebben. Dit was direct te merken: twee harpijarenden, twee gigantische anaconda’s, drie tapirs, een jaguar, vele reuzenotters en eindeloze andere soorten wildlife lieten zich tijdens deze elf dagen aan ons zien! A bout 93 % of Suriname is forest, it’s the greenest country on earth. And in most of it, mankind has never set foot! Totally pristine forests with endless possibilities for true adventurers. We can make the trip as extreme as you like. Fly out by helicopter, land on a sandbank in the middle of nowhere, and in the next few weeks peddle back to civilization in an inflatable canoe? It can be done! One of our expeditions was an eleven days boat tour on Lucie river. We flew to Amatopo, a small Trio Indian village on the banks of Corantijn river, near the border with Guyana. The first part of the boat ride, some twenty miles, we had one rapid after another, I don’t know how many times we climbed out of the boat, tugged it through the current, and climbed back in only to repeat all this within minutes. We only managed thanks to the skills of our Trio boatsmen. Seeing them at work was so impressive! After two days of hard work we reached a part of the river that few people have ever gone to. And that was obvious from the moment we got there, for during these eleven days we saw two harpy eagles, two gigantic anacondas, three tapirs, one jaguar, many giant otters, and so much more wildlife! 16 16 II su magazine su magazine Expedition

PEPERPOT NATURE PARK English P eperpot is een prachtig 820 hectare groot natuurpark, nog geen twintig minuten rijden van Paramaribo. De goede bereikbaarheid en de overweldigende dichtheid aan dieren geeft het enorme potentie om mensen te laten kennismaken met de natuur en alles wat daarin leeft. Het gebied is niet omheind door hekken en niet ook ingebouwd door verstedelijking en hierdoor is het park voor de dieren in werkelijkheid nog veel groter. Bovendien is maar een gedeelte van 27 hectare opengesteld voor toerisme. Dieren hebben dus een enorm rustgebied en daarbij ook de vrijheid zich binnen of buiten het park te begeven! Het park bestond uit vijf verschillende plantages. Die zijn sinds 1994 deels samengevoegd en met de tijd is het gebied gaan verwilderen. De diversiteit van dieren in het park is wat lager dan in het primair regenwoud, maar de dichtheid is vele malen hoger. Dat betekent dat je weliswaar misschien minder soorten kunt zien maar bepaalde soorten zoals luiaards, boomstekelvarkens, sommige slangen en kikkersoorten veel gemakkelijker kunt zien dan in het binnenland van Suriname. Een van deze slangensoorten is de ‘s nachts actieve lanspuntslang, een giftige slang die op zijn schutkleur vertrouwt, waardoor je er eerder per ongeluk op gaat staan en een beet riskeert. Gidsen moeten goed getraind zijn voordat ze gasten meenemen in het park tijdens de nachtelijke uren. Om deze reden zijn wij vijf jaar geleden verantwoordelijk geworden voor alle tours na sluitingstijd in het park. Onder goede begeleiding kunnen de mensen op en top genieten. Een wandeling of kanotour van enkele uren door het park kan al een enorme lijst van dieren en veel bijzondere waarnemingen opleveren! Niet alleen voor toeristen is deze locatie perfect om een geweldige wildlife-ervaring op te doen, maar ook voor de jeugd. Voor tripjes kunnen scholen gewoon naar het park komen en de volledige natuur ervaren! 19 I I su magazine su magazine 19 P eperpot is a beautiful nature park of about 2,000 acres – once comprising five plantations – just a twenty minute drive from Paramaribo. The present owners have not cultivated this land since 1994 so it has rewilded over time. With an overwhelming concentration of animals it offers numerous possibilities for visitors to discover nature and wildlife. Only part of the grounds, about 70 acres, is open to tourism. The park has no fences, nor is it enclosed by buildings. So the animals actually have a much bigger space to move around in and rest! De diversity of animals in the park is not as high as in the primary rainforest, but the density is enormous. Whereas one may find less different species, the chances of spotting certain types of animals – such as sloths, tree porcupines, certain snakes and frogs – are re much higher than in Suriname’s interior. One of these snakes is the nocturnal Fer-de-lance. Because of its camouflage, one may step on it by accident and risk a bite. Our guides therefore properly trained before they can take guests into the park at night. For this reason we are the only guides allowed to do tours after closing time. Our guests can have the time of their lives with professional guidance. On a walk or a canoe trip of just a few hours in Peperpot park you can spot numerous animals and see the most wonderful sights. N et zoals in veel andere landen heerst er in Suriname veel onbegrip wat betreft slangen. Zodra je je bezig houdt met slangen, wat ik deed door mijn tours, krijg je al snel het label ‘slangenman’. Steeds vaker werd ik gebeld door mensen met een slang in hun huis of tuin. Maar door mijn werk ben ik vaak buiten de stad en onbereikbaar. Al langere tijd speelde het idee door mijn hoofd om een zogeheten ‘Snake Patrol’ op te zetten. Veel landen hebben al een getraind team om slangen uit huizen of tuinen te halen, maar Suriname nog niet. Ik had alleen te weinig tijd om dit op te pakken. In 2020 ontmoette ik Fenne van Esseveldt, die als vrijwilligster in het toerisme in Suriname werkte. Zij zag hetzelfde probleem en kwam met exact hetzelfde idee. Zij had meer tijd en ik had het lokale netwerk. Samen hadden we het al snel voor elkaar dat Snake Patrol Suriname officieel van start kon. Inmiddels hebben we dertig vaste teamleden en nog veel meer vrijwilligers die kunnen reageren op meldingen. We merkten dat er vaak loze meldingen kwamen, dat wil zeggen meldingen van ongevaarlijke slangetjes, of soms zelfs ongevaarlijke pootloze hagedissen. Daardoor realiseerden we ons dat we eigenlijk meer moeten focussen op voorlichting over slangen aan de mensen. Sn a ke Pa t r o l A s in many other countries, snakes in Suriname are often seen as a problem and a threat. Lack of knowledge leads to misunderstanding and fear. Working with snakes, as I do, one is easily regarded as ‘the snake man’. People soon started calling me when they saw a snake in their house or their yard. But my work often takes me out of the city and out of reach. Many countries have a ‘Snake Patrol’, a team that collect snakes from property where they are not wanted. And I thought about organizing this in Suriname, too, but I just couldn’t find time to do it. But in 2020 I met Fenne van Esseveldt, a volunteer in tourism in Suriname. She recognized the problem and had the exact same idea. And she had more time. I provided the local network, and before long our cooperation resulted in the official start of Suriname’s own Snake Patrol! Today we have a team of thirty people, and several volunteers, who respond to calls about snakes. Since we started out, we found that many calls did not actually require our direct action – calls about harmless small snakes or even amphisbaenas (legless lizards). This made us realize that we needed to focus more on knowledge about snakes among people. 20 20 II su magazine su magazine

Onze slogan is dan ook: “The difference between beauty and fear is knowledge” Wanneer je weet wat je kan verwachten hoeft iets niet meer eng te zijn. Bij volwassenen is het soms nog wat lastig om hun beeld van slangen te veranderen, maar kinderen daarentegen staan nog volledig open en willen alles weten! Ons hoofdprodukt is masala, die op zorgvuldige wijze wordt geproduceerd en verpakt. De authentieke bereidingswijze maakt onze masala en doksa masala heel speciaal, die wij over heel Suriname distribueren. Arva Spices exporteerd haar masala ook naar Nederland. Natuurreservaat Raleighvallen ............................... M idden in de Coppename rivier is er een kleine eiland genaamd Fungu eiland. Fungu eiland is een bijzonder eiland, dat de poort van het Centraal Suriname Natuurreservaat vormt. Raleighvallen is een Natuurgebied van Stichting Natuurbehoud Suriname (Stinasu). Het is een beschermd gebied voor diverse diersoorten en waar er ook overnacht kan worden. Van Paramaribo is het een trip van 7 uurtjes naar de Raleighvallen.Het is 4 uurtjes met de bus/auto naar witagron en dan nog 3 uurtjes varen naar Raleighvallen. Varen kan in de droge tijd 1 tot 2 uurtjes langer zijn omdat de waterstand laag is en waarbij de gasten ook de boot moeten uitstappen en een stukje lopen over de rotsen. De boot wordt dan ook gestoten over de rotsen door de gids en bootsman. ............................... I n the middle of the Coppename River there is a small island called Fungu Island. Fungu Island is a special island that forms the gateway to the Central Suriname Nature Reserve. Raleighvallen is a nature reserve of Stichting Natuurbehoud Suriname (Stinasu). It is a protected area for various animal species and where you can also spend the night. From Paramaribo it is a trip of 7 hours to the Raleighvallen. It is 4 hours by bus/car to Witagron and then another 3 hours by boat to Raleighvallen. Sailing can be 1 to 2 hours longer in the dry season because the water level is low and guests also have to get out of the boat and walk a bit over the rocks. The boat is therefore bumped over the rocks by the guide and boatswain. Het plateau van de Surinaamse Tepui, D e Tafelberg. Een spectaculair gebergte in het groene hart van Suriname! Dit gebergte is een geologisch fenomeen ook wel Tepui genoemd. Dit soort gebergten hebben een vlak plateau omringd door steile wanden. Hierdoor isoleert het ecosysteem op de top van de berg zich grotendeels van de omliggende natuur. Het plateau van de Surinaamse Tepui, de Tafelberg, begeeft zich op een kilometer hoogte! Het grootste gedeelte van de dag bevind deze berg zich in de wolken. De isolatie, de hoogte, de vochtigheid en het gesteente geven de indruk dat deze unieke plek in Suriname, niet meer in Suriname is! Deze prachtige en ongerepte plek is vrijwel alleen te bereiken per helikopter, waardoor maar weinig mensen het plateau hebben kunnen bezoeken. Dick Lock en Steven Oldenstam vertrokken voor het eerst in 2021 met 6 andere expeditieleden per helikopter naar het plateau van de berg! Al jaren was het hun droom deze unieke plek te bezoeken. Maar niet enkel te bezoeken, werkelijk te ervaren en te beleven! Ze besloten 12 dagen te blijven. Met gedroogd voedsel, hangmatten en tarpaulin hebben ze een deel van het plateau kunnen verkennen. De vlucht erheen was al een hele ervaring op zich, het vliegen als een vogel vlak over het enorme uitgestrekte Surinaamse regenwoud. Vliegen langs de rand van de Tafelberg, en het zien van watervallen die honderden meters naar beneden kletteren. De eerste dagen waren intense en energieke verkenningsdagen. Lange dagen door ongerept en dichtbegroeid regenwoud. Tussendoor konden we opladen bij de hoogste watervallen van Suriname, prachtige kreken en unieke wildlife, er leek geen einde aan te komen. Na een ruime week voelde het al als thuis… De geluiden, de temperatuur, de ongereptheid. Het één zijn met de natuur en dit alles kunnen delen met 8 geweldige personen. T he Table mountain; A spectaculair mountain in the green hearth of Suriname. This mountain is a geological phenomina which is called a Tepui. This kind of mountain consist of a relatively flat plateau encompassed by steep cliffs. Therefore the ecosystem on top of this mountain is mostly isolated by the surrounding forest. The plateau of the Surinamese Table mountain can be found on a height of 1000 meters. The largest part of the day this mountain is surrounded by clouds. The isolation, the height, the humidity and the geology give the impression that this unique location is not in Suriname anymore. This beautiful and pristine location is almost only accessible by helicopter, therefore only few people are able to visit this area. Dick Lock and Steven Oldenstam departed in April 2021 with 6 other expeditioners to the plateau by helicopter. For years they have dreamt of visiting this place. But not only to visit, but really experience it! They decided to stay for 12 days. With dried food, a hammock and a tarp, they started to explore the plateau. The flight towards the mountain itself already was an amazing experience. Flying like a bird over the vast green Surinamese rainforest, seeing the edges of the mountain from the helicopter and hearing the waterfalls tumbling down hundreds of metres. The first couple of days of the expedition were intense exploratory days. The days were long but beautiful in the pristine and highly bushy forest. While exploring the area, we had some time to recharge at one of the highest waterfalls of Suriname and enjoy the beautiful creeks and the unique wildlife. There seemed no end to all the beauty we discovered. After a week, the place felt like our second home… The trip was amazing; the sounds, the temperature, the uniqueness and virginity of the area, being one with nature and to share all of it with 8 amazing adventurers.
