I have to say that I still consider it truly remarkable that the Dutch NOC (NOC*NSF) and the municipality of Rio de Janeiro have cemented a unique partnership in the run-up to the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games: their joint support for the project Ginásio Experimental Olímpico or GEO, a model for schools that prepare teenagers for life with and through sport. Since 2013, NOC*NSF and the GEO schools have been organising twice-yearly workshops and clinics, in which we ask a former or current Olympic or Paralympic athlete to share their knowledge with the students. In my view, this represents the ultimate embodiment of the Olympic spirit. I visited a great many of these workshops and clinics over the past few years. Wow! Keen, Ron Zwerver, or Elisabeth Willeboordse are talking to them about what the Olympic and Paralympic Games meant to them, or just showing their medals. Of course they haven’t heard of the big names of Dutch sport. But that medal says it all. It takes their breath away, just like it takes my breath away to see the passion, the single-mindedness and focus with which the young students, a lot of them from Rio’s slums, take part in these Olympic clinics. For the first time in the history of the Netherlands Olympic Committee we’re not just coming to ‘take something’ from the city in which the Games are to be organised, but we’re also coming here to ‘bring something’ of our own. We’re doing so with the aid of a large number of athletes, every one of whom was happy to take part in these GEO events. Under the general motto of ‘sharing knowledge is multiplying knowledge’, hundreds of children have learned to get just a little bit better at table tennis, judo, volleyball, swimming, korfball, basketball, or running. And they have drawn inspiration from the fantastic stories of the Dutch Olympic and Paralympic athletes, such as Hinkelien Schreuder and Inge Huitzing, who understand better than most that with sport you can win much more than medals. I watched the children stare in disbelief as the Paralympic champion Marlou van Rhijn changed out of her prostheses and put on her blades for the training session she was to give - blades on which she demonstrated incredible sprinting times on the athletics course of the GEO school Santa Teresa. It was simply marvellous to watch from a distance and to see her encouraging and inspiring the children, firing them up with her enthusiasm. conhecimento com as crianças. Ficavam sem palavras, como eu fico sem palavras sempre que vejo a paixão, a motivação e a dedicação que os jovens alunos das comunidades carentes do Rio exibem quando competem nas oficinas olímpicas. Pela primeira vez na história do Comitê Olímpico Holandês, chegamos à sede dos Jogos não apenas em busca de algo, mas também trazendo algo. Algo que trouxemos com a ajuda de um grande número de atletas, que toparam todos participar destas reuniões nas escolas do projeto GEO. Unidos pela ideia de que “compartilhar conhecimento é multiplicar conhecimento”, centenas de crianças se tornaram melhores Projeto GEO / amizade, respeito e excelência < 7
We shall be winding up this project during the Olympic Games in Rio, but we are already talking to Tokyo 2020 to see how we could cooperate in the run-up to the next Olympic and Paralympic Games and achieve something inspiring together. For ultimately, although of course it’s important for us to win medals, what is even more important is when winning those medals helps us to make the world a little bit better. And after the GEO project of NOC*NSF in Rio, I am absolutely confident that we have achieved that here. I wish to thank everyone who has been involved in this great effort. Porque no final das contas é importante ganhar medalhas, mas foi mais importante ainda a minha descoberta de que as medalhas só valem alguma coisa se pudermos usá-las para tornar o mundo um lugar um pouco melhor. What GEO stands for / O que é GEO The Ginásios Experimentais Olímpicos (Experimental Olympic Gymnasia), an initiative of the city of Rio de Janeiro, are schools located on the fringes of the slums or favelas. Most of their students, who are aged 11 to 15, also come from the favelas. Their daily routine includes a full programme of classes, including at least two hours’ sport, and three meals a day. ‘Some of the kids serve themselves three helpings at breakfast,’ observed Herbert Wolff, Head of International Affairs at NOC*NSF, who was closely involved in the project from the outset. ‘You could see that it came from real hunger. That affected me deeply.’ Origins In October 2009, after the IOC had assigned the 2016 Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro, a delegation from the city visited Beijing to learn how the Chinese had tackled the 2008 Games. During this trip the delegation also learned about China’s combination of sport and education at primary schools. The Brazilians were not familiar with this concept, but determined to introduce it in Rio to get young people involved in future Olympic and Paralympic Games. Three years later, in 2012, the first of the new ginásios opened in the district of Santa Teresa. By now Rio has four of these schools, each one attended by 350 to 400 students. 14 > GEO project / friendship, respect and excellence Localizados próximos às comunidades carentes, os Ginásios Experimentais Olímpicos são uma iniciativa da prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro. A maioria dos alunos, com idades entre 11 e 15 anos, também se origina dessas comunidades. Os alunos estudam o dia todo na escola (incluindo três refeições) e ainda praticam um mínimo de duas horas de esporte por dia. “Alguns enchem o prato três vezes no café da manhã,” diz Herbert Wolff, diretor de Assuntos Internacionais do NOC*NSF, que esteve evolvido no projeto desde o início. “Você percebe que eles não estão só com ‘vontade de comer’, que é fome mesmo. Isso me toca profundamente.” A origem do projeto Depois que o Rio foi escolhido pelo COI como sede dos Jogos Olímpicos de 2016, em outubro de 2009, uma delegação carioca visitou a cidade de Pequim (China) para aprender mais sobre a abordagem chinesa para os Jogos de 2008. Durante esta visita, a delegação também aprendeu sobre a combinação de esporte e educação nas escolas primárias. Os brasileiros não conheciam esse conceito, e queriam introduzi-lo no Rio de Janeiro para tornar seus jovens mais engajados nos futuros Jogos Olímpicos. Três anos depois, em 2012,

Gostaria de agradecer à Prefeitura por seu constante apoio e confiança.” André Bolhuis / President NOC*NSF / Presidente do NOC*NSF Objective The curriculum, which is unique to Brazil, give students a combination of sport and education in which standards of conduct and values take pride of place. Many of the students come from Rio’s slums. ‘Most of them see no future, no prospect of improving their lives,’ says Wolff. ‘Sadly, they come to believe that they cannot change their lives, that everything will always stay the same. But the GEO schools change everything for them.’ Teaching life skills is one of the main points of emphasis in the education programme, which is provided free of charge. Sport provides an opportunity to apply these skills. The students were selected on the basis of tests in arithmetic and language skills and on the basis of their passion – rather than pure talent – for sport. The GEO project does not focus on training future top athletes but on the personal development of the students, to improve their prospects of success in society. The Dutch connection NOC*NSF and the Dutch Consulate in Rio have been involved in the GEO project since 2012. In the first place, because both parties believe in the powerful potential of combining sport and education. NOC*NSF is also acting on the basis of the principle, as Herbert Wolff says, ‘We don’t want to just take something inauguraram o primeiro ginásio no bairro de Santa Teresa. Os alunos são selecionados por seu conhecimento básico de matemática e português, mas também pela paixão (e não necessariamente por seu talento) pelo esporte. O projeto GEO não pretende preparar futuros atletas profissionais; o foco é o desenvolvimento pessoal dos alunos, para que eles tenham muito mais chances de ser bem-sucedidos como membros da sociedade. away, in the form of winning medals, but we also want to give something.’ In concrete terms, NOC*NSF and its sponsors, the Partners in Sport, made it possible to send a present or past top athletes to Rio every six months to give workshops and clinics. The Dutch Consulate has also participated; it helped to set up the partnership between NOC*NSF and the education secretariat in Rio de Janeiro. This led to a memorandum of understanding between NOC*NSF and the city of Rio. The Consulate has also repeatedly drawn attention to the GEO project with the media and among potential partners in both the Netherlands and Brazil. Past and present Dutch top athletes In May 2013, the former top judoka Elisabeth Willeboordse became the first to visit the GEO schools for a number of clinics and presentations. Then came Ron Zwerver (volleyball), the swimmers Marleen Veldhuis and Johan Kenkhuis, the Paralympic athlete Marlou van Rhijn, the wheelchair basketball player Inge Huitzing, table tennis player Trinko Keen, another delegation of swimmers including Marcel Wouda, Sharon van Rouwendaal, Ferry Weertman and Marcel Schouten, the Dutch korfball youth team and finally, in the spring of 2016, the swimmers Hinkelien Schreuder and Bastiaan Tamminga. The Olympic athletes gave a presentation about their personal development, their sporting dreams, their setbacks and the way they overcame them, the highs and lows of their career, and the meaning of Olympic values like respect, friendship and the pursuit of excellence to their sporting careers. O consulado holandês também participou; ajudou na colaboração entre o NOC*NSF e a Secretária da Educação do Rio, uma parceria que resultou em um Memorando de Entendimento entre o NOC*NSF e a Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro, e também divulgou o projeto GEO na mídia e entre potenciais parceiros na Holanda e no Brasil. Atletas e ex-atletas de elite da Holanda Em maio de 2013, a ex-judoca Elisabeth Willeboordse foi a primeira a visitar as escolas GEO para participar de várias oficinas e apresentações. Em seguida vieram Ron Wanderer (vôlei), os nadadores Marleen Veldhuis e Johan Kenkhuis, a atleta Paralímpica Marlou van Rhijn, a estrela do basquete de cadeira de rodas Inge Huitzing, o tenista de mesa Trinko Keen, uma segunda delegação de nadadores com Marcel Wouda, Sharon Van Rouwendaal, Ferry Weertman e Marcel Schouten, a seleção holandesa juvenil de corfebol (esporte não-olímpico) e - finalmente – no início de 2016 - os nadadores Hinkelien Schreuder e Bastiaan Tamminga. ‘What we saw’, says Wolff, ‘is that with each visit a number of children were really inspired and tackled things differently afterwards. We have to look at that – at those few individuals to whom we can really give something that lasts.’ The students thought it fantastic that Dutch top athletes had taken the trouble to go all the way to Rio. For them. It was not just the clinics that made an impression on them; even more important, perhaps, were the personal stories told by the top athletes. Firstly, every one of the athletes who participated said that they recalled the visit with feelings of great warmth. Future From the outset in 2012 the NOC*NSF was clear that it would withdraw from the GEO project after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. NOC*NSF’s aim was to provide inspiration and an initial galvanising force for others, who could take over the baton after the Games. Enthusiasm for the project has soared in the Netherlands over the past few years. For instance, Elisabeth Willeboordse’s foundation Judo2Inspire gave GEO students an opportunity to visit the Netherlands, and Trinko Keen collected material to boost the development of table tennis at the schools. Other initiatives are planned, and NOC*NSF will continue to work on strengthening the ties and partnership between the participating Dutch groups and the GEO schools. contratempos e perseverança, seus altos e baixos, e sobre o significado de valores olímpicos como respeito, amizade e excelência para sua carreira desportiva. A ideia era que o NOC*NSF servisse de inspiração e motivação para outras pessoas, que assumiriam o projeto depois dos Jogos. Nos últimos anos, o projeto tem gerado enorme entusiasmo na Holanda: Elisabeth Willeboordse (junto com sua fundação Judo2Inspire) tem dado a alguns alunos do Projeto GEO a oportunidade de visitar a Holanda, e Trinko Keen captou recursos para ajudar a promover o desenvolvimento do tênis de mesa nas escolas. On the flight back from Rio de Janeiro to Amsterdam, Elisabeth Willeboordse said to herself: ‘I must get involved with this.’ Olympic bronze medal winner and former European titleholder had been to Rio before, of course: Brazil is a great judo nation. But in May 2013 she had seen a different side of the city – the children from the favelas. She was the first in what would be turn out to be a long line of present and past Dutch top athletes who visited the GEO project in Rio at NOC*NSF’s request. She went there to talk about her own sporting dreams and to give a couple of clinics. ‘They gave me an amazing reception. They thought it was fantastic that we were visiting their school. They wanted to touch me and to see and hold my medal. Such a small thing, and you should see those big eyes ... Well, small – that bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Games is worth a lot to me, of course, but hundreds of people have won gold medals. Still, that’s not remotely an issue for the children.’ ‘What you get back is so much love, incredible. That affected me very deeply.’ “Você recebe tanto amor de volta... É inacreditável. Me comoveu muito.” Before she arrived, the children had been taught some basic information about the Netherlands and about Willeboordse’s achievements in the tatami. ‘One girl had actually made me a drawing. get something back for it that will help them for the rest of their lives. For me, this is the Olympic spirit in a very pure form. It’s not just about taking, but also about giving something or leaving an enduring heritage. It may sound a bit pretentious, but I really saw that it does something for the children. I felt my heart opening up every time I was there: I have some really wonderful memories of Rio, which I already cherish now, before the Games even starts. ‘I’m proud of the Dutch National Olympic Committee, which launched its multi-year partnership with the city of Rio de Janeiro back in 2012. The underlying philosophy is that we’re not just interested in medals, but also seek to achieve a wider positive impact on Brazilian society. Giving as well as getting, in other words. The Dutch project was unique. To my knowledge, no other national Olympic Committee has undertaken a long-term commitment of this kind in the run-up to the Games. It was inspiring to see Dutch Olympic medallists giving workshops for days on end to children from the favelas, mostly out of sight of the cameras – to watch them getting the best out of these children and boosting their confidence. appreciation and satisfaction, but also a deeper understanding of the role they could play in young people’s lives. With this insight, the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence resonated with an entirely new significance. Another thing that struck me as remarkable was that the workshops did not draw any distinction between Olympic and Paralympic athletes. I shall never forget the sight of Paralympic athlete Marlou van Rhijn sitting in front of the young athletes – many of whom still view disability as a taboo subject – and changing her prostheses for blades as if it was the most natural thing in the world, enabling the children to get used to the idea. I want to compliment NOC*NSF for not choosing the path of least resistance. Instead atletas também ganharam algo: apreciação e satisfação, mas também a consciência de que podem fazer a diferença na vida desses jovens. Os valores olímpicos de amizade, respeito e excelência ganharam um outro significado. Também foi muito especial o fato de que as oficinas não diferenciaram entre atletas olímpicos e paraolímpicos. Nunca vou me esquecer como Marlou van Rhijn, que, na presença de jovens atletas – que muitas vezes ainda encaram a deficiência como um tabu – substituiu suas próteses regulares pelas especiais (as blades) como se fosse a coisa mais natural do mundo para que as crianças se sentissem mais à vontade. Quero parabenizar o NOC*NSF por não optar pelo caminho mais fácil. Ao invés de apoiar projetos pontuais de ONGs, optaram por uma parceria de longo prazo com o governo municipal. ‘Of course it’s important for us to win medals. But what’s even more important is that winning those medals helps us to make the world a little bit better.’ Gerard Dielessen / Secretary General NOC*NSF The efforts made by NOC*NSF are rightly referred to as a remarkable contribution to the GEO project, according to Sarah Looise and Naomi Ruijs of Utrecht University. The two researchers describe the chosen form of education as a key factor in the children’s development. The clinics given by past and present Dutch top athletes have made an important additional contribution. Looise and Ruijs, research students at the department of Management and Organisational Sciences (USBO), travelled to Rio de Janeiro in the spring of 2015 in the wake of the wheelchair basketball players Inge Huitzing and Irene Sloof, visited the GEO schools, interviewed past and present pupils at the school, and spoke to many other people involved in the project. This resulted in a research paper entitled ‘Een sportieve Nederlandse bijdrage aan de GEO-scholen in Rio de Janeiro’ (‘A sporting Dutch contribution to the GEO schools in Rio de Janeiro’). The top athletes’ visits have an enormous impact, as the research findings make abundantly plain. Meeting the Olympic and Paralympic athletes in person and hearing their inspiring stories about how they reached the top, not to mention having an opportunity to touch an Olympic medal, made success tangible for the pupils. At these moments the top athletes also become role models, who can show students how to turn their dreams into reality. Looise and Ruijs spoke to numerous pupils, and without exception they had loved the experience and said it really motivated them. Some of the pupils still communicate regularly with the Dutch athletes Elisabeth Willeboordse and Marleen Veldhuis, mainly through Facebook. And those pupils in particular still see the judoka and swimmer as role models to this day. Without such permanent personal contacts, however, the long-term impact on the pupils is limited. Looise and Ruijs therefore recommend providing clinics for a limited number of pupils, which would make it possible to establish more intensive contact with the participants. One could also choose to remain at one school for a longer period of time instead of going to a different school every day. Looise and Ruijs say that it is about choosing whether to reach a large number of 58 > GEO project / friendship, respect and excellence pupils in one go or to have a greater impact in the longer term. It emerges clearly from interviews with a number of former students that they are extremely grateful for the opportunities that the GEO schooling has given them. An unforgettable time, they say. Some have done so well in their sport that they have won scholarships to private schools, while others are now attending mainstream state schools. Those schools, the students say, do not recognise the importance of sport, which they experience as a definite loss. ‘Sport shows you the difference between right and wrong, teaches you the importance of keeping to the rules and respecting each other. I apply all that in my everyday life,’ one of the pupils said in an interview with Looise and Ruijs.

Visitaram as Escolas GEO, entrevistaram alunos e ex-alunos e professores das escolas e conversaram com diversos outras partes envolvidas. Os encontros pessoais com as atletas olímpicas, os relatos inspiradores sobre sua trajetória até o topo e a oportunidade de segurar nas mãos uma medalha olímpica tornou a experiência real para os alunos. As atletas também desempenharam o papel de exemplos, mostrando aos alunos como alcançar seus sonhos. Todos os alunos que tiveram contato com Looise e Ruijs se sentiram inspirados e motivados. Alguns alunos ainda mantiveram contato intenso com Elisabeth Willeboordse e Marleen Veldhuis, especialmente por meio do Facebook. E são justamente esses alunos que consideram a judoca e a nadadora como exemplos de vida. Sem estes contatos pessoais e duradouros, o impacto ao longo prazo na vida dos alunos seria muito mais limitado. Por isso, Looise e Ruijs recomendam oferecer oficinas para grupos pequenos de alunos, para intensificar o contato e as trocas pessoais. Outra recomendação seria trabalhar em apenas uma escola por um período maior, ao invés de passar cada dia numa escola diferente. Looise e Ruijs apontam que é uma escolha entre alcançar muitos alunos de uma só vez ou gerar um impacto maior no longo prazo. As entrevistas com alunos e ex-alunos demonstram que eles são gratos pelas oportunidades que as escolas GEO lhes proporcionaram. Dizem que foi um período inesquecível. Alguns conseguiram bolsas para estudar em escolas particulares graças a seu empenho esportivo, enquanto outros estudam em escolas públicas. Os alunos explicam que, onde estão hoje, não valorizam a importância do esporte. In October 2014 a delegation from NOC*NSF and its Partners in Sport visited the GEO school in the district of Santa Teresa, Rio.
